2020 Proposals and Submissions

2020 Gulf South Summit

March 25-27, 2020 – Nashville, Tennessee

Building Healthy Communities

At the 2020 Gulf-South Summit, help us develop best practices and explore new frontiers in service-learning and civic engagement. For this year’s theme “Building Healthy Communities,” we are especially interested in presentations on how our community/university partnerships are fostering the growth of a healthy environment in the communities where we live, work, and serve. Because there are many aspects of a healthy community, proposals may address a variety of issues including access to a quality education, safe and affordable housing, adequate employment, adequate transportation, physical activity, nutrition, and quality health care, to name a few.

We hope to explore the complexity of embracing all voices in building healthy communities across diverse contexts, encourage dialogue and deliberation as democratic practices, and consider restorative justice initiatives, innovation through social entrepreneurship, best practices in student leadership for civic engagement, and the latest in community-engaged scholarship.

The proposal submission form will ask presenters to indicate what format is ideal for their presentation, the level of the intended audience (Introductory, Experienced, Both) and what audience(s) they hope to address: faculty/practitioners, administrators, community partner agencies, students, or all audiences.

Submission Deadline:  Closed on Oct. 15, 2019

Presentations will be in the following formats (please note dates):

Interactive Workshop

An interactive workshop is 75 minutes and should engage participants in activities that offer insight, practice, or instruction relevant to the topics discussed in the workshop. Interactive Workshops will be scheduled in the morning on Thursday, March 26.

Panel Discussion

A panel discussion is a 45 minute Q&A session with co-panelists assembled by a primary presenter. A panel discussion should involve 3 or more individuals offering various perspectives on one topic. Panelists from different organizations and/or institutions are encouraged. Panel Discussions will be scheduled in the afternoon on Thursday, March 26 and in the morning on Friday, March 27.

Individual Presentation

An individual presentation is a 45 minute session, including time for Q&A, where presenters may share information on a topic of their choice. Presentations will be scheduled in the afternoon on Thursday, March 26 and in the morning on Friday, March 27.

Poster

Posters (visual display) are ideal for descriptions/models of civic engagement projects and programs. All other session proposals will also be considered for acceptance as a poster presentation. As a general rule, posters created by students will be directed to the Student Showcase (see below). The Poster Session is scheduled during the opening reception on Wednesday, March 25, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Student Showcase

The Student Showcase will highlight student leadership in service-learning and civic engagement. Proposals should be in a poster format, designed for a student audience, with a focus on challenges encountered and lessons learned. Student advisors may submit proposals on behalf of student teams and determine actual representatives at a later date. All other session proposals will also be considered for acceptance as a Student Showcase poster presentation if presenters are students. Presenters must participate in the Showcase on Thursday, March 26 from 4:00 – 5:15 p.m.
