WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Presented by Senior Warden Billy Lewis, Huntsville Unit

Huntsville, Texas is home to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, in addition to five state prisons within the city limits. As the city’s largest employer, with Sam Houston State University being the second, TDCJ plays an integral role in the community. The Huntsville “Walls” Unit is the oldest state prison in Texas and houses the State of Texas execution chamber. Participants will tour inside the historic wing, meet administrators and staff to learn about their roles and experiences, see behind the scenes of the textiles industry, and have the option to view the execution chamber. The visit will end with an opportunity for guided reflection and questions so that participants leave with an in-depth understanding of this institution.
