Reflections on Dynamite Hill

Barbara Shores and Helen Shores Lee are the daughters of Arthur Shores, a prominent Civil Rights attorney, during the 1960s in Jim Crow Birmingham. Ms. Shores and Judge Lee are co-authors of The Gentle Giant of Dynamite Hill: The Untold Story of Arthur Shores and His Family's Fight for Civil Rights. Speaking on behalf of her sister, Ms. Shores provides a compelling firsthand account of her father’s courageous activism and life in a Birmingham neighborhood that came to be named “Dynamite Hill.” Dynamite Hill was the site of some 50 unsolved Klan bombings that happened there between 1948 and 1963—including two bombings of her own home, resulting in the hospitalization of her mother and the killing of their pet dog.

Ms. Shores will talk about her personal experiences and the challenges she faced in segregated Birmingham, the lessons she learned from her father about tolerance and justice, and her own life-long commitment to improving the community for all people.
